Product of the week: Strawberries

Does it get much more British than these juicy crimson morsels with their tiny furry green hats on? That or the ruddy cheeks that come with little hands grabbing them in a berry-stained deluge before the punnet has hit the table. 

These strawberries will have seen another, more gentle human hand not long before they reach yours. Hand picked in the heart of the Kent countryside at Chegworth Valley, this is the first of their new season’s crop. Grown in both in tunnels and out in the open, they and have a range of varieties which enables a fruitful harvest from May to November. Unsprayed, the berries are grown following organic principles on a ‘table top’, where the berries are raised off the ground. With this method there’s no need to sterilise the soil and with less disease around due to better air circulation, there’s more control over the crop. It also makes picking easier too, so they arrive with you looking smart - hats on and all.
