We can’t ignore it anymore, the time has come for us to scream the C word like it’s nobody’s business. That’s right: Christmas. And now that the season of cheer has come, there’s nothing we love more than a good, festive-filled Christmas market in London. Forget Winter Wonderland, these are the best alternative markets that not only celebrate independent makers and producers, but sell the best street food while you shop. Pick up a few Christmas presents, grab a mulled wine and gorge yourself on all that Christmassy food.
Crafty Fox at Mercato Metropolitano
A favourite of ours, Mercato Metropolitano, is famous year-round for it’s continued pride in its sustainable food ethos. Food aside, the market’s opening its doors on the first Saturday of every month to host Crafty Fox Market. Crafty Fox support emerging designers and puts independent makers at their core. Be sure to check out some of our favourite vendors: Vui Vui Bodycare, A Weathered Penny, Sketch Appeal… ok we could go on, they’re all flippin’ great.
(7th – 8th December)
Southbank Winter Market
Southbank’s Winter Market is back again for another six weeks of festive fun. Gift and food stalls run along the River Thames, packed to the brim with seasonal goodies. It’s the perfect Sunday afternoon stroll. This year, we’re eagerly anticipating the arrival of The Circus Bar, a new pop-up promising dishes cooked over live fire-pits (including flat iron steaks, baba ganoush, and hot-smoked salmon) and enough mulled wine to have you singing until 25 December rolls around.
Ok, so not technically a Christmas market, Borough Market is extra special at Christmas. One of our favourite year-round haunts, the market takes on the spirit of Christmas with mulled wine and mince pies and seasonal produce in abundance. If you’re there for the cheese, their annual Evening of Cheese is back for another year on 12 December: think carol singers, Parmesan wheel cracking, a lot of Christmas trees, and more cheese than you ever thought possible. Incredible.
Ally Pally Christmas Carnival
With a funfair, Santa’s grotto, a pantomime on ice and food everywhere you turn, the Ally Pally Christmas Carnival is the market of childhood dreams. There’s really nothing but Christmas happening over here, but our favourite part is obviously the food. StrEATlife street food and craft beer festival is setting up for weekends filled with some amazing pop-ups. Including (but not limited to) Backstreet Diner, Pin Brewery, Mother Clucker and Ladle. We’re working on our Santa bellies…
Cockpit Arts, Christmas Open Studios
Did we mention we love supporting independent makers? Well if we didn’t, we do. And the Cockpit Arts Christmas Open Studios is one of the best places to do it. With over 170 designers, expect a whole host of goodies, from jewellery to ceramics, tree decorations to clothes. Get in there quick on the first weekend of December.
