Mighty Beef Meatballs

A classic and comforting family favourite. We've baked the meatballs in the tomato sauce, to keep them tender and juicy. Serve on a heap of spaghetti.

Here's how you do it

  1. Preheat the oven to 180℃.
  2. First make the tomato sauce. Fry the onion in a little olive oil in a saucepan.
  3. Add the garlic and cook for a few seconds more, then add the jar of passata, with the sugar, salt, pepper and oregano. Turn up the heat and leave to bubble for 10 minutes.
  4. Prepare the meatballs by first frying the onion in olive oil until soft.
  5. Mix the softened onions with the mince, egg, breadcrumbs, parsley, oregano, chilli flakes, salt and pepper.
  6. Mould the mince into meatballs, about the size of golf balls.
  7. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and brown the meatballs.
  8. Arrange the meatballs in an oven-proof dish, pour over the tomato sauce and bake in the oven for 15 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through but still tender.

  • 450g beef mince
  • 1 egg
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1tbsp finely chopped parsley
  • 1tbsp finely chopped oregano
  • a pinch of chilli flakes
  • 1tsp salt
  • 1/2tsp pepper

Tomato Sauce

  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, chopped
  • 1 jar of passata
  • 1tsp finely chopped oregano
  • 1/2tsp sugar
  • 1/2tsp salt
  • pinch black pepper
