Mulled White Wine Poached Pears

A warming winter dessert that celebrates the wonderful sweetness of this season's pears.

Here's how you do it

  1. Peel each pear and halve length ways, keeping the stalk in tact. Peel the zest from half the orange.
  2. Place the pears and orange zest in a saucepan and cover with the wine and spices.
  3. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook the pears for 10-20 minutes, depending on the ripeness of the pear, until tender.
  4. Once cooked, remove the pears from the pan and continue to reduce the poaching liquid to a thin syrup.
  5. Return the pears to the poaching syrup to warm through. Serve warm with toasted nuts, custard or ice cream. Also great served cold with yoghurt.
