New MacDonalds Farm

We are Matthew & Louise Macdonald. We run a small farm on the beautiful Neston Estate near Bath. We are 1st generation farmers and have been farming for 8 years now. We have always farmed to traditional free range methods with high welfare being a top priority. We produce happy free range hens eggs to organic standards, and are soon to be in organic conversion for official UK organic status. All our eggs are sold to the local community, local farm shops, and local deli’s in and around Bath city.

Our main aim is to produce the best quality produce from the happiest animals. Our current flock of 500 chickens consists of various rare breeds, cross breeds and hybrid hens. Some of these include Copper Black Marans (chocolate), Cream Crested Legbar (blue), Light Sussex (light tint), White Leghorn (white), Bluebell (tinted), Cuckoo Marans (chocolate), Russet Blues (blue/turquoise), and Colombian blacktails (tinted).

There’s big plans afoot for the farm – Matt is in the process of building a shed for 1,000 more hens (still tiny compared to the maximum flock size for free range egg laying hens of 16,000!) Our new shed itself can house 1,500 chickens but by stocking the shed with a smaller number of birds, it makes for happier birds. At the moment, the new shed is still just a shell but Matt assures us that it will be ready for the ladies arrival in October. The chickens are fed a totally organic diet, including organic corn, flax, and kelp.

Our gorgeous hens roam the farm, forage amongst the wildflowers, and produce the most delicious Quattro coloured eggs. There are always a minimum of four colours guaranteed in each box. Colours range from the palest pastel blue, to the richest spotty chocolate. No box is ever the same! Eggs are super fresh, being delivered to your door within a few days of being laid. Perfect for poaching! Quattro Coloured eggs are known for their rich taste, and of course, the beautiful coloured shells which is like nothing you’ll find in a supermarket!
