The story of our bees began when Dale Gibson realized that the roof of our Victorian sugar warehouse overlooking The Shard would be a perfect place to keep bees in the heart of London. Surrounded by parks and lush rooftop gardens, Bermondsey Street provides a surprisingly green environment. After completing beekeeper training, he installed his first hives in 2007, beginning a fascinating journey into what has become a passion for bee welfare and raw honey production.
Urban hives play a crucial role in pollinating gardens and allotments as well as providing local honeys for city-dwellers. From the beginning, our Bermondsey Street Honey has been highly sought after, and its uniquely complex multi-floral taste has won many awards. Being judged ‘Best Honey in London’ at the 2011 National Honey Show was a great endorsement of the care we put into our bees and our artisan honey.
As responsible beekeepers, we play an active role in planting new forage. With London’s open space ever-diminishing, bee-friendly planting is top of the agenda for existing green spaces. Bermondsey Street Bees vigorously promotes this, working with local government and community groups to sponsor and maintain sustainable planting initiatives… enhancing urban environments for people and bees alike.
In 2012 we set up our second apiary, in the Suffolk village of Orford, producing our Suffolk Coastal Honey. The bees forage in fields, trees and wild hedgerows to produce this quintessential English country honey. As with Bermondsey Street Honey, it is raw and unprocessed: We simply spin out our honeys, cold filter them and jar them – preserving their nutritional value and richly layered tastes.
Alongside our own honey production, our ‘Metro’ and ‘Union’ labels allow us to curate limited edition honeys from other English artisan beekeepers who share our philosophy.
