Chris Levett is the 8th generation of the Levett family to farm in the weald of Kent. Traditionally the farms back then were mixed farms with the focus on hops. During the 70's and 80's there was a significant move away from hops and into fruit growing which is the core of the business today. Chris grows mainly apples and pears on 100 acres, but in the last five years has seen the huge increase in demand for English cherries. Now growing 15 acres with another 5 acres being planted this winter.
As well as fruit Chris has a herd of around 60 pigs roaming around a 6 acre field. They love feeding on all the windblown apples, which makes the best tasting roast pork without the need for apple sauce! All the pork produced is sold through his own farm shop.
Although not organic Chris values all the little insects and predators in the orchards, even introducing more through out the year, as these are much more effective in eating all the pests than using chemicals. He even has little earwig houses dotted around the farm!
When not looking after everything on the farm Chris loves spending time with his wife Holly and two boys George and Henry, taking a stroll round the orchards especially when they are in full bloom.
‘I think the whole concept of FarmDrop is amazing. Its linking customers direct with the farmers. Fresh really does mean fresh. The cherries I pick will be on your table 48hrs later.’ Chris Levett, Baretilt Farm
