Cascina del Melo is set in the gentle hills of Piedmont’s Gavi wine district. In 2003 Giorgio Rossi Cairo bought this stunning 110 hectare estate. About a fifth of it is Cortese and Barbera vineyards, the rest being fields and woodland like oak, chestnut, elderflower and acacia. Today Georgio’s daughter Caterina Rossi Cairo and English husband Tom Dean manage the estate living there with their 3 children. They recently installed an amazing new winery, covering over 2500 m2, featuring a large traditionally built rammed clay wall sheltering the winemaking equipment. Their Gavi is really a world apart from conventional examples: brimming with vitality, it’s an elegant wine but has definite depth of fruit. Cascina del Melo is a project from La Raia, one of the finest wineries in Piedmont.
