Roast Chestnuts

20 minutes

Easy to prepare and a fantastic bonfire night snack!

Here’s how you do it

  1. Allow the chestnuts to sit at room temperature for a few days. The carbohydrates will begin to turn to sugar, naturally sweetening the chestnuts.

  2. Make a cross at the top of the chestnuts with a sharp knife. If you have a curved knife to hand you can cut all the way around the chestnut so when they're cooked they open up like a clam. If you don't have a curved knife the former method is fine.

  3. Heat a cast iron skillet over the stove (or small bonfire!) Cook for 15 minutes, moving the chestnuts from time to time. Allowing the chestnuts to char slightly will impart a delicious smoky flavour.

  4. Peel the chestnuts when hot, making sure you take off the inner skin too.
