Homemade Baked Beans

Extra special beans on toast. In just 20 minutes, whip up your own beans; with more flavour and less sugar than the well-known tinned variety.

Here’s how you do it

  1. Add a glug of olive oil to a pan, fry the onion until soft.
  2. Add the smoked paprika and chilli flakes.
  3. Turn up the heat and add the vinegar, then add the tomatoes, sugar and veg stock.
  4. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Add the beans, then simmer for a further 5 minutes.
  6. Season with salt and pepper. Serve on toast.


  • 1 red onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp dark muscovado sugar (from the larder)
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chilli flakes
  • 1 can cannellini beans, drained
  • 1 tin of tomatoes
  • 100ml vegetable stock
