You probably already know who they are – the alcohol-free spirit producer taking the no and low world by storm. Now read the fascinating story of how Seedlip was born.
Nature inspires and informs everything we do at Seedlip. Without it, we wouldn’t have the amazing ingredients we use to make our drinks, so we celebrate it at every chance we get.
Starting with our name, Seedlip, which derives from 17th century farming baskets called seedlips, once used to hand-sow seed. We also feature British wildlife on our labels. These are not only creatures you may find on our founder Ben Branson’s farm, but are composed of the six botanicals within each spirit.
The appreciation for nature stems from Ben. His mother’s side has been farming in England for nine generations over 300 years. Ben’s father, on the other hand, has been in the branding and design industry for over 40 years. Ben is truly a product of both his parents, with an obsession and love for the natural world, as well as an affinity with design.
The Seedlip story started in 2013 when Ben discovered ‘The Art of Distillation’, a book written in 1651 outlining distilled herbal remedies – both alcoholic and not. Ever the tinkerer, Ben was inspired to purchase a small copper still and experiment with distilling herbs grown in his garden.
A few months later, while out for dinner with friends, Ben ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail. To his dismay, he was served a pink, sugary drink that neither paired with his meal or the atmosphere of the restaurant. It was the defining moment that led Ben to begin two meticulous years of perfecting the world’s original distilled non-alcoholic spirit.
He launched Seedlip Spice 94 in London’s Selfridges on the 4th November 2015. His first 1,000 bottles sold out in three weeks, the second thousand in three days and the third batch in 30 minutes online. It was a pioneering move, offering those not drinking alcohol a sophisticated, adult option. Now, Seedlip has created a new no & low category that grows every year.
Our NA spirits were not created to mimic the flavours of traditional spirits. In fact, Seedlip is intentionally made without any Juniper – the ingredient legally required to call a product a gin. Our three expressions; Seedlip Garden 108, Seedlip Grove 42 and Seedlip Spice 94, are each complex and nuanced, meaning they pack a punch.
Seedlip Garden 108 is a bright, herbaceous blend with captivating top notes of Peas, Hay and Hops. A complex herbal base character of Spearmint, Thyme and Rosemary round out this refreshingly savoury spirit.
Seedlip Grove 42 is a celebration of vibrant citrus flavours: Blood Orange, Bitter Orange & Mandarin, balanced by the stimulating notes from Ginger root, Lemongrass & Lemon peel.
Seedlip Spice 94 is a rich, aromatic blend of Allspice berries and Cardamom. Its earthy bitterness from high-quality Oak & Cascarilla bark is balanced by uplifting notes of tart Grapefruit & Lemon peels.
Having a sophisticated, adult drink to define the transition between work and winding down for the evening is a ritualistic experience that Seedlip can offer. You can enjoy having a drink at the end of the day in the comfort of your own home and having no alcohol, calories or sugar makes Seedlip a consistent go-to any day of the week.
The recipes we share are designed to inspire people to use ingredients at their best and seasonality always comes first. Here’s a recipe for our Rosemary Booch cocktail that marries the fresh, light flavours of Seedlip Garden 108 with the tartness of Kombucha.
