Food waste is at dangerous levels in the world, “the global volume of food wastage is estimated at 1.6 billion tons” . Food waste has a large environmental impact contributing to solid waste, greenhouse gas emissions and the loss of natural resources such as water. We need to reduce food waste to save the environment from the irreversible effects of climate change.

So, how to reduce food waste? Be mindful of what you buy and begin a zero waste food shopWhat are ways to reduce food waste? Planning ahead what you are going to cook and checking the use-by date are great ways to reduce food waste. Cooking in batches to freeze and getting creative with your leftovers will stop food waste in your household.

What to do with food waste? Compost your food scraps.

Turn Food Waste Into Compost

You can recycle your food waste into compost, which is a great way to enhance your soil quality. Compost is created by organisms found in the soil that decompose plant and food tissue through biological processes which become commonly known as “humus”.

If you don’t have space for a compost bin, make sure to separate your food waste into a food waste bin, if your council offers this service. This ensures your food waste gets composted and does not end up in landfill.

To start your own compost journey, follow these simple steps outlining how to start a compost bin and how to make compost from waste food.

1. Poke holes in the bottom and sides to create ventilation
2. Place some leaves, cardboard, newspaper, vegetables, fruit and grass clippings in the bin
3. Add some water to moisten the ingredients
4. Secure the lid and roll it around to mix everything together
5. Ensure there is airflow and find a sunny spot
6. Layer your food with some grass clippings, leaves and soil
7.Turn over the compost every week to aerate the ingredients
8. Mist with water

How long does it take for food waste to turn into compost? This depends on the size, type of food waste, how often you turn it and the temperature of the environment.
